Welcome to the Costa Calida!
Tucked away in the South East corner of Spain is the Spanish coastal province of Murcia. With more than 300 days of sunshine, it is little wonder that its 156 miles of coastline is called Costa Calida which means Warm Coast. Despite this, it remains one of Spain's lesser known holiday destinations.
The Costa Calida stretches from the small fishing town of San Pedro del Pinatar in the north to the seaside resort of Aguilas in the south. San Pedro del Pinatar actually nestles on a strip of land between two seas, the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor (The Little Sea) which is in fact Europe's largest saltwater lagoon. Salt has been extracted from the Mar Menor since Roman times and as you drive by today you will see the white mountains of salt destined for kitchen tables the world over.
The town of Aguilas dates from Roman times and lovers of antiquity will be delighted to know that the Costa Calida's only city is the mighty Cartegena which boasts some 3,000 years of history.
Given its year round warm climate, it is not surprising that the Murcia region is very much the "garden of Spain" and indeed exports fruit and vegetables throughout Europe and beyond. It is also a wine producing region, centred around the towns of Jumilla and Yecla.
The Costa Calida is also where you'll find one of the world's most famous holiday resorts, La Manga Club, home to the region's only five star hotel and some of the best sporting facilities in Spain, including 28 tennis courts, eight football pitches and three championship golf courses. No wonder La Manga is the destination of choice for Premier League football teams looking to escape the British winter!
The Costa Calida is served by two airports from the UK - Alicante which lies just to the north of the province of Murcia and Murcia-San Javier Airport which is located in San Javier, 17 miles south of the city of Murcia.
